Farm Automation, Automated Systems and Logging

Farm automation and monitoring through a network of switches and alerts brings many benefits:

• frees the farmer for other tasks
• performs the best possible job by continually operating the automated systems within ideal parameters
• alert mechanisms advise the farmer of any problems detected by the farm monitoring equipment
• helps the farmer optimise resources and achieve the best possible outcomes for their nutrient solution, water supply and the growing systems themselves

• logs key variables which can assist the farmer to meet certification and regulatory requirements.

Each installation is tailored to suit, with the farmer selecting which services will be automated. The automation can be upgraded and enlarged to accommodate additional services and farm expansions.

Available services for commercial hydroponics farms include:

• continual nutrient monitoring to set parameters, including water top up, nutrient top up and water usage
• various feeding/watering/misting schedules, integrating real-time parameters such as air temperature and humidity
•  monitoring all integrated farm aspects
• SMS and email alerts for deviations from parameters that may indicate a problem, for example burst pipe
•  logging of key environmental variables including temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and rainfall, for automated and management decision making
• quality control logging e.g. cold room temperature, equipment logs
• secure off-site monitoring via the internet

An automated system will require a suitably equipped computer and modem if monitoring is required. When planning the installation requirements, at least one farm consultation is required. Additional infrastructure may be required, for example the installation of a suitable shed/covered area. During this visit, the farmer will also be advised of anything that may cause problems with the growing processes, as during a regular consultation. As automation relies heavily on information gathered on appropriate environmental variables, monthly calibration of certain equipment is desirable. This can be done by the farmer or by Cyber-Hydroponics at farm consultation rates.
